Pakbeng is a small village in Laos, on the Mekong River about halfway between the Thai border at Huay Xai and Luang Prabang, Laos. Pak Beng is connected by a sealed road with Oudomxai along the Nam Beng River.
It is small town about 48km from Thai border. Pakbeng sits midway between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang on the Mekong. Pakbeng developed as an overnight stop for both cargo and passenger ferries as the river was once the only major transport route in the country. (Pak means mouth and Beng is the name of the river).
There are a large number of guesthouses and restaurants for travellers who almost all depart early the next morning. As the result, it’s a night stop of Mekong Cruise in Laos. Most of activities happening in Pak Beng is taken place along the river. The most recommended activities here is visiting Elephant Camp, temples and local market.
