MUANG KHUA

Muang Khua is a small town in Phongsali Province of northern Laos. Located on the bank of the river Nam Ou, it is a beautiful, peaceful spot halfway up the river between Nong Kiaow and Hat Sa in northern Laos. It is often uses as a transit town (the halfway point between several other places), but the charming village is worth visiting

Located on the banks of the Nam Ou and Nam Phak River, Muang Khua is the last major step before joining Dien Bien Phu Vietnam since the border to Vietnam opened not all that far from here. This historic commercial centre was also a former French garrison until the fall of the French army at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

Muang Khua has a large ethnic diversity such as Akha, of Khmus and Tai Dam. Surrounded by high mountains and isolated from national highway, Muang Khua remains untouched and not so popular to tourists. Therefore, for those interested in trekking, the region is a great place to explore the untouched and rarely visited mountains and the primitive beauty of nature which is not exploited by people.

The weather in the town might be a little cold and unfriendly compared with the rest of Laos. There are many pastel-coloured houses and oodles of small-town charm, set amid starburst palms where the Nam Ou and Nam Phak meet.
