Nam Ou river boat trip from Muang Khua to Nong Khiaw (affected by the Nam Ou 3 Hydropower station)
Recently, we keep receiving the email from our travel partner about the Nam Ou river boat trip from Muang Khua to Nong Khiaw, which is now affected by one more Hydro Power Dam. This post is to keep you up to date of what is going on.
The Dam is located 2:30 minute cruising from Muang Khua downstream the Nam Ou river, right before the beautiful Ban Sopchem, which is currently very famous for its charm, and serenity. From Nong Khiaw, it is the 2 hour cruise. RIGHT IN BETWEEN THE BOAT TRIP
HOW THE DAM AFFECTS THE NAM OU BOAT TRIP
The dam project spans in about 2 Km along the Nam Ou river, and no boat can pass, up or down. Hence, to continue the boat trip, we must use 02 boats: 01 from Muang Khua to the Dam, and another one from the dam to Nong Khiaw. This is a bit inconvenient, but still worth to do. As apart from the dam area, the natural environment of the Nam Ou remain untouched.
HOW TO CROSS THE DAM
As noted above, there is the 2-km road in between, hence to cross the dam, we will use the tuk tuk to transfer from 1 boat pier to another one. This will take about 10 minutes, and we can continue the boat trip as normal on THE SAME KIND OF BOAT
NOTE: We need to walk up the last 50-meters of the downstream pier, the tuk tuk cannot come down. Luckily, the tuk tuk driver, and the boatman can help with the luggage
